IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAM

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a non-profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland whose mission statement below outlines their education goals.

  “Through comprehensive and balanced curricula coupled with challenging assessments, the International Baccalaureate Organisation aims to assist schools in their endeavors to develop the individual talents of young people and teach them to relate the experience of the classroom to the realities of the world outside. Beyond intellectual rigour and high academic standards, strong emphasis is placed on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship, to the end that IB students may become critical an compassionate thinkers, lifelong learners and informed participants in local and world affairs, conscious of the shared humanity that binds all people together while respecting the variety of cultures and attitudes that makes for the richness of life.”  


I.B. Middle Years Program
The program focuses on relating the content of the classroom curricula to the realities of the world outside.
The program accentuates the interrelatedness of the various curriculum disciplines thus advancing a holistic view of knowledge.
The program stresses the importance of communication skills, research skills, responsible citizenship and intercultural awareness.

The program is guided by five common themes called the Areas of Interaction. They are:
- approaches to learning (learning how to learn)
- community service
- health and social education
- environment
- homo faber (man the maker)

There are nine academic subject groups in the program:
Arts
English
French
Math
Physical Education
Religious Studies
Science
Social Studies
* Technology
*Technology is taught through all subject groups


Middle Years Program Courses
Students should achieve a 75% or better average in their grade nine year as a pre-requisite for acceptance and will enroll in the following courses:
- English 10IB (5 credits)
- Humanities 10IB (5 credits)
- Science 10IB (5 credits)
- Math 10IB (5 credits)
- French 31aIB (5 credits)
- Religious Studies 15IB (3 credits)
- Physical Education 10IB (3/5 credits)
- Art Appreciation 10IB (3 credits)
