The content of this course reflects the competency of the Intermediate
Level of French as a Second Language Program. Students who have
successfully completed the content of the Beginners Level and students
who have not yet completed the content of the Intermediate Level
begun in junior high will have the opportunity to continue to develop
their skills and knowledge through a wider range of vocabulary and
language structures of the French language. Students have the opportunity
to develop a greater appreciation of the French culture.
French 30 is a course which allows students to complete the Intermediate
Level of the French as a Second Language Program. Successful completion
of this course meets the admission requirements for post-secondary
and university entrance.
French 31a is the first of three courses of the Advanced Level of
the French as Second Language Program. The Advanced Level follows
the Intermediate and Beginning Levels of the nine levels of the
proficiency program as prescribed by Alberta Learning. The course
expands the students’ knowledge of vocabulary and structures
and develops greater proficiency in listening, speaking, reading
and writing. The cultural component continues to be an important
and integral part of the course
This course is intended for those students who have completed year
4 of the Middle Years Program (MYP) mathematics program and wish
to obtain their year 5 distinction. This course will meat all the
requirements of the French 31a course; however, students will achieve
these requirements by focusing on the areas of interaction, making
links between curriculums and by viewing the curriculum from an
international perspective.
French 31b is second of three courses in the Advanced Level of competency
identified in the French as a Second Language Program of Studies.
Students will be able to engage in various language experiences
in the fields of communication both oral and written, culture, language
and general language education. Analysis, critical thinking and
interpretation are a major focus in this course.
This course, designed for honour students of the French 31a program,
fulfills the requirement of the French 31b course in the French
as a Second Language Program of studies. In addition, this course
follows the objectives of the I.B. curriculum where a substantial
number of projects, in reading, literature and research prepare
the student for the grade 12 exams. This course also provides the
basis for the International Baccalaureate French Language B Programs.
French 31c is the final course in teh Advanced Level of competency
identified in the French as a Second Language Program of Studies.
This course is designed for students to refine and improve their
language skills through the sutdy of grammar, literature (novels,
plays, short stories, poetry), communicative activities and authentic
documents.
French 31c IB is designed for students wishing to obtain the French
I.B. Certificate or Diploma - Language B. The program includes in-depth
study of literary works, the mastery of grammatical concepts, the
writing of formal essays, and oral presentations.

This course covers the basic communication skills in Italian which
are developed through the receptive skills of listening and reading
and the productive skills of speaking and writing.
This course is for students with no prior experience with Italian
but wish to prepare for Italian 20 IB. It covers the basic communication
skills in Italian which are developed through the receptive skills
of listening and reading, and the productive skills of speaking
and writing.
Italian 20 expands the concepts learned in Italian 10. It has a
more concentrated focus on the communication experiential approach
and culture in Canada and abroad. It further develops speaking,
listening and writing skills.
Italian ab inito is an introductory course for students
wishing to fulfill the requirements for an IB Diploma and who have
had limited experience with a second language. Italian ab inito
is a two year course introducin students to the basis of the language
along with an application of Italian culture. The prerequisite for
Italian 20 IB is Italian 10 H or consent of the Modern Languages
Department prior to registration.
Italian 30 covers Italian history and culture and how it affects
our present day in Canada and abroad. The students expand their
written and oral skills by writing, doing presentations and analyzing
Italian literature, short stories and poetry.

IB candidates in the second year of Italian ab inito will
complete an oral examination as part of their internal assessment
along with two external exams provided by the IBO, which are written
in May.

Latin 10 covers basic Latin vocabulary and grammatical structure at
the beginner level. The emphasis is on reading and Latin to English
translation. We will also study everyday life in Ancient Rome. No
previous knowledge of Latin is required.
Latin 20 continues the study of basic Latin vocabulary and grammatical
structures at the beginner/intermediate level. It also includes a
study of the spread of Roman influence in the Ancient World. Latin
10 is a pre-requisite for this course.
