English 10-1 is a matriculation course, which integrates language and
literary skills through the study of the short story, essay, novel, poetry,
Shakespearean and modern drama. Critical and interpretive analysis
becomes an important function of both literary appreciation of texts and
the creation of texts. Communication skills are an essential consequence
of the focus of study.
English 10 Honours is a matriculation course designed for those students
with high interpretive and writing skills who wish to challenge more mature
content in greater depth and scope. It is designed to meet the needs
of the more academically oriented. The areas of study are similar
to those listed above for English 10.
The grade 10 English MYP serves as the final year of the MYP program,
which some students have begun in junior high. In the spirit of
a differentiated curriculum and the Alberta Learning guidelines, students
are immersed in the study of language arts and are encouraged to
develop a sensitivity to the rest of the world through cross-disciplinary
links through clearly defined areas of interaction.
English 20, a matriculation program, enhances and intensifies the basic
skills developed in English 10. Using literature as a base, with emphasis
on Canadian Literature, the student will be expected to develop critical
and creative responses that effectively reflect and develop his/her understanding
of the form, structure, style and ideas of the literary genres.
English 20 Honours provides a historical overview of classical literature.
Intended for more capable students who enjoy the challenge of difficult
literary works, the program encourages critical thought and mastery of
expression.
Intended for students who love to read and write, English 20 IB gives
approved candidates the opportunity of experiencing the rigors of a program
that meets international standards. English 20 IB is intended only
for students who have maintained a first class standing in English 10-1
H or English 10-1 MYP and are able to handle the demands of oral and written
assignments and examinations. Students are expected to enhance
their study of ancient and modern works through intensive and extensive
personal reading.
English 30, a matriculation course, is appropriate for students who wish
to continue their education beyond high school. By their experiences
with literature in the various genres, students are encouraged to improve
their ability to think clearly and critically, to express ideas effectively
in speech and writing, and to listen and read, and present with discrimination.
English 30 Honors is an enriched matriculation program for students who
demonstrate noteworthy interpretive and expressive skills. Students
are exposed to literary masterpieces in order to come to an understanding
of basic human truths and to practice independent thought and expression
based on sound analytical principles.
In grade 12 English IB students complete the program by taking both English
30 IB and Literature 21A IB. Besides the ongoing in-depth study
of major literary works, students submit two essays in World Literature
for external evaluation, take the formal oral examination and write the
two final examinations. By taking advantage of the adequate spacing
of major assignments and examinations throughout the year, students can
comfortably meet all requirements and deadlines.
